Our Plan

Before explaining our plan, we believe it would be best to first explain what the biggest causes of poverty are

The 4 Major Causes of Poverty

1. Lack of access to opportunities that lead to employment

An example of this is a problem that not only affects Gibraltar but also various countries in Europe including the UK and Spain, as well as Nigeria. According to la Confederación Nacional de la Construcción (CNC), they estimate that around 700,000 additional workers are needed to keep up with national demand in the construction industry.

2. Lack of benefits for unemployed people

This is something that affects many countries but not Spain. Spain is one of the best examples as to why a well designed system that offers benefits like el paro and la ayuda contributes to economic growth. Even though they spend billions of euros on this annually, Spain has one of the fastest growing economies in the eurozone.

3. Wealth Inequality

This is something very significant in countries like Gibraltar which don’t have wealth taxes and allow wealthy individuals to exploit loopholes. Nigel Feetham has been doing a good job at shutting down these loopholes recently.

4. The Education System

Gibraltar’s education system mirrors the British model, which was originally designed during the industrial era to produce obedient workers for factories. Although society and the job market have evolved drastically, the core structure of the education system has remained largely unchanged. As a result, it often fails to equip students with the practical skills or entrepreneurial mindset needed to break out of poverty in today’s world — especially in communities facing systemic economic challenges.

In other words, rather than encouraging critical thinking or creativity, the priority was to produce efficient employees who fit into an already established economic model.

In Gibraltar, around 80% of the workforce is employed in the private sector, with the remaining 20% in the public sector.

To better explain our plans, we are going to have a look at the framework which guides us in our operations.

Our Unique Qualities that Separate Us from Other Organisations

In Project 2035 we recognise the 6 fundamental qualities that correlate to the success of a non-profit organisation

  1.  Solving the root cause of the problem
  2. Collaboration with governments, other organisations and philanthropists
  3. Sources of income
  4. Marketing strategies
  5. Total transparency 6. Focusing efforts and areas of impact

Pilot Project

Construction Apprenticeships in Nigeria

We would like to help both countries with major problems that affect them. Gibraltar lacks enough skilled workers in the construction industry and each year we depend more on foreign workers to keep up with demand. Nigeria lacks enough schools and hospitals.

If we can send Gibraltarians over to Nigeria to construct schools and hospitals whilst they receive their credentials, we can solve 2 big problems with this approach.

Our pilot project will have 2 phases as we will explain thus:

Phase 1 - Construction of Student Accomodation

All Gibraltarian students will need a place to stay whilst they conduct their apprenticeships in Nigeria. Nigeria also lacks qualified people in the healthcare industry.

By creating a student accommodation facility close to a hospital location (phase 2) it will serve as an investment from Nigeria into their country. By having this student accommodation they can later use it to accommodate students in the healthcare industry who will be going through their training in the nearby hospitals built in phase 2.

Phase 2 - Construction of Hospital

After completing phase 1, Gibraltarian students will have an accommodation where they can stay for the duration of their apprenticeships. Now here is where we would create a hospital with Gibraltarian apprentices and Nigerian instructors.

Here Gibraltarians will take turns in the construction process. For example, first we would send those who are going to learn masonry, next we will swap those apprentices out with plastering and plumbing apprentices, next we would swap them out with painting and electrical apprentices.

🇬🇮 Gibraltar: Construction Trade Instructor Salaries

The Government of Gibraltar recently advertised a vacancy for an Instructional Officer in Bricklaying at the Gibraltar Training Centre. The position offers a salary scale ranging from £31,702 to £40,655 per annum, depending on experience and qualifications. Additionally, the role includes an Instructor's Allowance of £3,132 per year. Government of Gibraltar

Therefore, the total annual compensation for this role can reach up to £43,787.

🇳🇬 Nigeria: Construction Trade Instructor Salaries

While specific data for construction trade instructors is limited, general electrician and plumber salaries in Nigeria provide some insight:

Electricians in Nigeria Salary Range: ₦74,725 to ₦244,008 per month Plumbers in Nigeria Salary Range: ₦53,816 to ₦181,083 per month

This opportunity provide a massive cost savings for the government

Benefits of This Project

  1. Facilitates access to training and apprenticeship opportunities to Gibraltarians.
  2. Incentivises these opportunities by offering attractive international programs with accredited certifications for all attendees. People naturally love to participate in humanitarian projects, especially when they are conducted in other countries which need the support.
  3. Helps to close the skills gap in the construction industry.
  4. Reduces unemployment by giving people skills and qualifications which lead directly into employment opportunities.
  5. By doing this project in Nigeria, the costs of training people is automatically reduced.
  6. By associating with Project 2035, the government reduces the costs for these projects even further.
  7. By collaborating with the Nigerian government, again the costs for these projects are reduced.
  8. By constructing projects like hospitals and schools in Nigeria, Gibraltar will form a strong relationship with Nigeria. This could create better trade between both countries.
  9. Strengthens the reputation of the Government of Gibraltar.
  10. Positions Gibraltar as a global leader in skills development, which would improve Gibraltar’s reputation internationally.
